Astronomy Night – Lyrid Meteor Shower
Apr 21st @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Join Dr. Lionel Crews from the University of Tennessee at Martin Astronomy Department and the Discovery Park education team for the Lyrid Meteor Shower on Monday, April 21, for the third informative Astronomy Night of the year. This month’s event will be located on the Great Lawn from 7-9 p.m. Feel free to bring a chair or blanket to best observe the meteor shower.
As comets travel through our solar system, heat from the Sun causes them to leave a trail of pieces behind. If the Earth passes through one of those trails as it orbits the Sun, we get a Meteor Shower. One of these is known as the Lyrid meteor shower, as the meteors appear to be coming from the constellation of Lyra, the lyre. Come sit out on the great lawn and see if you can catch a few of these “shooting stars.”
Passport to the Universe
There are six remaining Astronomy Night programs in 2025. Anyone who attends five or more of these events in the calendar year and completes our special training will receive a unique patch to commemorate the year’s astronomical events.
If you have already joined the passport program, don’t forget to bring your passports for the third stamp this month.
