By the Campfire’s Glow: A Living History Christmas brings the 1860s to life with an authentic Civil War-era holiday celebration. Visitors can enjoy demonstrations of camp life, traditional holiday beverages like Wassail and interactive caroling around the fire. Join the Living Historians in the Settlement Area for a one-of-a-kind seasonal experience.
Schedule of Activities:
Friday:
5 pm
Dinner preparation begins.
6 p.m.
Dinner served. Participants will be available to answer guest questions about gear, uniforms and period Christmas decorations.
After Dinner:
Spectators are invited to join around the fire for singing and interactive discussions about the historical period.
Saturday:
10 a.m.-4 p.m.
The Living Historians will be camping in the Heritage Garden of the Settlement during the “Let it Glow” walk-thru.
- They’ll be ready to discuss gear, uniforms and period Christmas decorations.
- A turkey will be cooking over the fire throughout the day.
- Samples of Wassail will be offered to visitors. (Wassail is a period drink made of fruit juices and spices.)
During the “Let it Glow” Walk-Thru
6:00 p.m.:
The turkey that was cooking all day will be served for dinner.
6:30 p.m.:
A skit performance featuring soldiers who, after foraging for days, surrender for food.
7–7:30 p.m.:
- Exchanging of gifts between the campers.
- Wassail samples will be available for guests.
8 p.m.:
Singing period songs around the fire, inviting spectators to join in.
