By the Campfire’s Glow: A Living History Christmas

Experience the magic of a 19th-century Christmas during By the Campfire’s Glow: A Living History Christmas, happening Friday, Dec. 12 and Saturday, Dec. 13, from 5-9 p.m. in Discovery Park’s Settlement area. Led by J.C. Stahlman and a group of 18 reenactors, the event brings historic holiday traditions to life with authentic camp scenes, a crackling fire and warm traditional Wassail. Visitors can stroll through the Settlement during “Let It Glow” and step back in time for an evening of history, storytelling, festive spirit and maybe even a sample of Wassail.

Schedule of Activities:

Friday:

5 pm 

Dinner preparation.

6 p.m.

Mulligan stew with period trimmings will be served among the Living Historians. Participants will be available to answer guest questions about gear, uniforms and period Christmas decorations.

After Dinner:

Spectators are invited to join around the fire for singing and interactive discussions about the historical period.

 

Saturday:

10 a.m.-4 p.m.

The Living Historians will be camping in the Heritage Garden of the Settlement during the “Let it Glow” walk-thru.

  • They’ll be ready to discuss gear, uniforms and period Christmas decorations.
  • Turkey and fowl will be cooking over the fire throughout the day.
  • Samples of Wassail, a period drink with fruit juice and spices, will be offered to visitors.

During the “Let it Glow” Walk-Thru

5 p.m.:

The Living Historians will be set up and finishing dinner preparations.

6 p.m.:

The turkey and fowl that was cooking all day will be served for dinner.

6:30 p.m.:

Interaction with spectators, photo ops and weapon firing demonstrations.

7–7:30 p.m.:

  • Exchanging of gifts between the campers.
  • Wassail samples will be available for guests.

8 p.m.:

Spectators are invited to join the Living Historians in singing period songs around the campfire.
