HOMESCHOOL DAY OCT. 19, 2023

Oct 19th, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The Smithsonian Institution presents: Voices and Votes: Democracy in America

Amanda Little will be coming to Discovery Park of America and the Martin Public Library to share the story of Kidizenship with us and discuss the relevance and importance of young voices in local communities and national democracy. She will explore the power and potential of creative youth civic programming inside and beyond the classroom. She will share some of the incredible creative content young Americans have produced in Kidizenship’s civic contests, which have invited kids to design their own American flags, write civic hero stories, create and deliver presidential speeches, write and perform their own national anthem and document civic action in their communities.

She will also share submissions from a contest she recently hosted in her hometown, titled “Show Us YOUR Nashville,” which asked kids to dream up big ideas about how to improve their city. Judged by Senator Bill Frist and Representative Justin Jones, the contest drew submissions from hundreds of kids entered and the winners will present their ideas this month to Nashville’s new mayor.

Amanda will work with students during her visit on a creative project in which they can explore and express their own ideas about civic life in their region, towns and communities.

Classes will begin promptly at 1 p.m. and ends at 4 p.m. so please make plans to arrive no later than 12:45 p.m.
